The Benefits of Deep Breathing

Deep Breathing is known by a few names: abdominal breathing, belly breathing, diaphragmatic breathing, and some others. The basic concept is breathing fully, using the full capacity of the lungs and getting the maximum amount of oxygen available into the lungs at all times. What a wonderful concept! I doubt that anyone could intelligently argue against this good practice, but there may be more benefits from deep breathing than we realize.

One of the uses of the practice of deep breathing is to help solve stuttering and stammering. If you have ever been afflicted by this problem or if you know someone who has been, you can imagine the relief that would come from solving it. It stands to reason that if controlled and purposeful breathing can solve such a disability as this, it would be beneficial in any speaking scenario such as public speaking, important meetings, or even just conversations with friends.

Another use is to relieve tension. Remember how your grandmother used to tell you to take a deep breath when you were upset or angry? Well, now Grandma’s advice is fully backed by scientific evidence that this works to calm things down. I realize that you didn’t need scientific proof to know that Grandma gave good advice, but it’s still fun to hear that. When we are tense, our whole bodies tighten up and constrict in a way that does not promote health. Blood and oxygen do not flow as easily as they should, so the cells are not nourished properly. Relieving tension lets the systems of the body flow and operate as they should.

Breathing well, breathing deeply, relaxes the mind and body and is known to bring some relief to emotional problems. We all know that the stresses of life can show up in our health and in how our bodies operate. If you’ve looked at someone who is stressed or worried, you’ll be able to see it in their face, in their posture, and in their overall body language. All of that is what shows on the outside. The furrowed brow, the slumped shoulders, the drawn face are the outside manifestations of stress and upset. Reactions happen on the inside too, but they are hidden from our direct view. Anything that can relieve upset and stress will benefit health and all of life.

While it is certainly not a substitute for exercise, deep breathing helps to build muscle. The actions of tissue repair and muscle building require nutrients and one of those nutrients is oxygen. Breathing deeply supplies more oxygen to more cells so that tissues can heal and muscle can build. The action of breathing deeply exercises the lungs and gently massages the abdominal organs around the lungs and the diaphragm. This gentle and constant motion helps keep all these organs more alive and awake. The heart is also greatly benefited from each deep breath because its job of delivering oxygen to all parts of the body is made easier by the abundance of available oxygen.

The act of breathing deeply will help to improve digestion and nutrient assimilation. Every cell needs oxygen to operate well and the cells of the digestive system are no exception. Digestion is a big job with many different processes happening simultaneously. Eating well is only part of winning the game of health. Making sure the food is digested properly and helping the body get all the nutrients from food is just as important to good health.

The nervous system is also improved by deep breathing. The brain, the spinal cord and all the nerves need their proper amount of oxygen, too. Proper breathing makes oxygen more available to this vital communication system of the body and allows it to function as it should.

There are so many benefits from the simple act breathing deeply, it seems funny that more attention isn’t placed on this simple action. It helps improve the immune system, relieves pain, and elevates our mood. It improves the quality of our blood, increases stamina and boosts energy. On top of all that, deep breathing is one of the best ways to detoxify the whole body. It is said that a body releases 60 to 80 percent of its toxins through breathing alone. That in itself is a great reason to learn this simple procedure, practice it well and adopt it as a most healthful habit. Your life will be better for it.

Many years ago I read the ‘Science of Breath’ by Yogi Ramacharaka (a.k.a  William Walker Atkinson) and practice the Complete Breath which is a combination of Low, Mid and High Breaths that are done in the order shown, in such a way that they form one uniform, continuous and complete breath.  You can find an excellent summary of techniques and exercises  of the Science of Breath here.

I love trying out supplements and we’ve tried a lot of them over time. I guess what I am looking for is something that works instantaneously but I should know better that it just doesn’t happen. Most supplements need time to work so you don’t every really get the full impact of them until you’ve used them for months on end. This is generally why most people give up on them. We all want to see results now and we tend to lose interest if nothing happens within a week or so.

Personally, I am yet to see a supplement that has an immediate impact on me, and I’ve tried a lot of them. However, just recently we purchased a product called Better than Coffee from Primal Force (previously known as Choline Punch) and I have to say that I am mightily impressed.

We found out about Better than Coffee from an email Wanda had received. In the past she had signed up to a newsletter by a Dr Al Sears. Dr Sears is one of those online doctors that focuses more on health products rather than pharmaceutical type products….which is always good to see! There are a few doctors like this – Dr Wright and Dr Mercola are another two. They basically heavily promote their products and if you have signed up to a newsletter you will probably be inundated with emails from them.

Now normally we would just ignore this type of promotional stuff because they are all generally the same. It usually goes something like this:

“This product is made from high quality leaf products picked by Nepalese Sherpa’s at the very top of Mount Everest under a full moon on the first Sunday in June.”

And the promotional blurb for Better Than Coffee didn’t sound much different but for some reason we decided to give it a try since we like to review products for this site. Yes we were skeptical even though we did buy 3 tubs of the stuff…go figure!

TBetter Than Coffee Review - Choline Powderhe tubs eventually arrived and we immediately opened one up to give it a try. We both had a smell of the contents and agreed it had a lovely sweet smell almost like berries. Not surprising really since one of the ingredients listed on the tub is Natural Mixed Berry Flavor.

We mixed it with juice to try. Once we drank it down we went back to the office and got back to work. We didn’t really think too much about it but within about an hour we started to feel really good. It was like a buzz of energy had hit us and we were feeling fantastic. We both had a very similar reaction.

Normally by around 2pm I am quite lethargic and feel like I need to have a sleep. My energy levels completely collapse and I struggle to keep working. But with this drink I had no problems and I was able to work until 4pm quite easily. I was literally astounded since I’ve never experienced anything this fast working before.

Choline Punch - Better Than Coffee ReviewNot only did it increase our energy levels but our overall mood increased as well. We both felt a lot happier and in a really good mood and it stayed with us throughout the afternoon and into the evening.

Funnily enough this product didn’t work so well on my brother. I usually get him to try things out as he is willing to give anything a go.  He said it did nothing for him but then again he doesn’t have issues with low energy levels so perhaps he doesn’t need it.

I also found that if I take Better Than Coffee too early in the day it doesn’t have the same impact. In the morning I am usually quite refreshed anyway so I don’t think I need it but when early afternoon hits and I take it I can feel fighting fit again within 15 minutes. However, if I take it too late in the afternoon I have trouble getting to sleep at night so between 1pm and 4pm is the right time for me to take this drink.

It really does get me through the day and I can function normally without feeling the need to take an afternoon nap.

What is the flavor like?

Better than Coffee is a powder so you mix it with water or juice. You have to use one tablespoon per glass of water (8 fluid oz).  It is quite sweet so when we tried it with juice it really was overly sweet. We now make it with half juice, half water. We have tried it with straight water and it is easy to drink but it is much nicer with juice. The flavour really is delicious and we look forward to drinking it.

Better Than Coffee Review - Choline Punch ReviewDoes it Mix Well in Water/Juice?

You can see from the image that it mixes quite well with juice although it’s not perfect. You really have to mix it in quickly as soon as you add it to the glass. We also find that we have to stir it between each mouthful otherwise some of it settles on the bottom of the glass and you can be left with clumpy bits at the end. Fortunately however the drink tastes great so even if you happen to find clumpy bits they are easy to swallow.

Would We Buy it Again?

Yes, definitely and in fact we have ordered another three tubs.

How to Use a Neti Pot

Himalayan Institute Original Neti Pot

The very first step is to get yourself a Neti Pot.

There are a number of styles available and they are made of different materials, ceramic, plastic, copper, and stainless steel.  Each has its own advantages and disadvantages, so you will probably want to look them over and decided which is best for you.

The ceramic Neti Pots are very popular and the Himalayan Institute Ceramic Neti Pot is one of the top selling neti pots available. This is because its shape allows for optimum nasal irrigation. This pot is decorative and has the lotus design on the side.  You can read our full review here.

Another very popular ceramic Neti Pot is the Ancient Secrets Ceramic Nasal Cleansing Pot which is the one I own. I really like this one because it is ceramic and easy to keep sparkling clean. It’s also reasonably priced – you can get one on Amazon for around $10.

Some ceramic neti pots can tend to be heavy.  Because of the added weight, they usually aren’t as big meaning they need to be refilled mid-way through the process. However, I have a smaller neti pot and I personally haven’t ever found this to be a problem.

I also have a plastic Neti Pot which I use when traveling. I bought it as a kit from Walgreens when I was in Las Vegas. It came with 30 saline packets. These neti pots are inexpensive and light weight, and although they are generally not in any way aesthetic they do the job they are designed for.

Neti pots made of copper are usually expensive, but they do come in larger sizes.  The copper tarnishes easily, therefore loses its appeal in a short time.

Stainless steel Neti pots are clean and very clinical looking.  That may be a plus from some viewpoints.  Others may not like that aspect at all and prefer something a little more decorative.

Using a Neti Pot is easy.  With very little practice, it becomes easy as washing your face or brushing your teeth.  It can be used over a sink or in the shower, over a bowl on the table or even outside.  Wherever is comfortable or convenient for you.

This is what you need:

  • A Neti pot
  • Warm water
  • Good quality sea salt
  • A small towel in case of spills
  • Tissue or a handkerchief to blow your nose when you’re done

This is what you do:

Warm some purified water or use tap water that is warmed to a temperature similar to formula in a baby bottle.  Test it on the inside of your wrist for a comfortable temperature.  It should not be too warm or too cold. Some say that you should have the water temperature as warm as you can stand but I don’t think that’s necessary and it may do some damage if you have it too hot.

Fill the pot with the water you just warmed and add ¼ teaspoon of good quality sea salt. Neti Pot Salt in loose form and sachets are available online and this is an ideal way to know that you are using certified, good quality salt. I like the saline packets from Walgreens neti pot kit I purchased as at least I knew I had the recommended dose.

Swish the water and the salt until the salt has dissolved completely.

Lean forward over the sink so that you looking into the sink. Now turn your head so that you are looking over to your left.  Be sure that your head and shoulders are over the sink.  Keep you head tilted forward so that the water will run out the other nostril instead of down your throat.

Place the spout of the Neti pot just inside the opening of your left nostril, not too deep, but just enough to prevent the liquid from spilling as you pour.

Just relax and open and breathe through your mouth. Make sure you do this otherwise you will swallow most of the liquid.

Slowly pour the warm water into the left nostril.  Allow it to flow through the sinuses and out through the right nostril.  The sensation may feel strange at first, but you will get used to it.

Continue pouring until half the salt water is used.  Then remove the pot from that nostril.

Switch sides, now tilting you head forward and your face to the right, keeping your head and shoulders over the sink, and insert the spout into the right nostril.

Use the same procedure, pouring the salt water and letting it flow through and out the left nostril until all the salt water is used.

Remove the spout from that nostril.

Very gently blow your nose at this point, realizing that much mucus will have been loosened and will come out.  This is usual and is desired. Make sure you don’t blow your nose too hard. I found that if I blow my nose too hard it causes my ears to block and pop.

It really is that easy. It may take a few attempts to get it right but after just a few times, this can become part of your daily routine. It’s fantastic for people with sinus issues so well worth trying.

I wash my hair everyday…I have to because I have oily hair. I have naturally blond hair and although I have a lot of it, it is quite fine. So washing everyday has become the norm for me for the past 30 or so years.

Because of this, lately I have been trying to look for shampoos that are a little more gentle not only on my hair but my body as well…our skin absorbs whatever we put on it.

So I have been checking the ingredients in some of the commercially sold shampoos to see exactly what’s in them.

Here’s what’s in just one bottle of Tresemme which is one of the shampoos I was using:

Water (Aqua/Eau), Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate, Ammonium Laureth Sulfate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate, Sodium Lauroamphoacetate, Ammonium Chloride, Fragrance (Parfum), Glycol Distearate, Propylene Glycol, Laureth 7, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Dipropylene Glycol, DMDM Hydantoin, Citric Acid, Tetrasodium EDTA, Sodium Xylene Sulfonate, Quaternium 80, Bisamino PEG/PPG 41/3 Aminoethyl PG Propyl Dimethicone, Butylphenyl Methylpropional, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Sodium Cocoamphoacetate, Limonene, Amyl Cinnamal, Linalool, PEG 18 Glyceryl Oleate/Cocoate, Biotin, Polyquaternium 7, Polysorbate 20, Hydrolyzed Keratin, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Hydrolyzed Silk, Ascorbic Acid, Hydrolyzed Wheat Starch, Niacinamide, Soluble Collagen, Chondrus Crispus (Carrageenan) Extract, Tocopheryl Acetate, Panthenol

Do we really need all of this in our hair and absorbed into our bodies?

I really want to try and avoid using chemicals wherever possible so for the past week I have started making my own homemade shampoo using baking soda and conditioner using apple cider vinegar. Now this is probably not what you would recognize as a shampoo as it is suds-free so you won’t get that nice foaming action that you would expect in regular shampoos but it does work and it works really well…at least for my hair type. My hair can tend to be a little flat and lifeless but this gives it some body.

I thought that using baking soda would cause my hair to dry out and be straw-like but so far I haven’t had a problem. I also thought I would have trouble getting a comb through it after washing. Again I haven’t experienced any problems.

The only issue I had was on the fourth day of using it my hair felt dull and flat. It was almost like I had a build up of the baking soda and I was tempted to go back to regular shampoo. But I decided to stick with it and the next morning I ensured that I washed out the baking soda more thoroughly and I used the apple cider vinegar rinse on all of my hair instead of just the ends which is what I had been doing up until then. This seemed to do the trick.

I have read where some people who normally wash their hair every day have found that they can now go for extended periods without having to wash their hair, by using this type of shampoo. As yet I haven’t found that to be the case but I have only been using it for less than a week now. Also, because I am currently using virgin coconut oil and magnesium oil on my face and body, it does tend to get into my hair especially overnight and cause the hair to look oily by morning…so that may be the reason.

You’ve got nothing to lose trying it because it is extremely cheap to make – you will save a small fortune in shampoos! Plus it only takes a few minutes to mix up.

How to make homemade shampoo…

Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup of baking soda – Most of us have used baking soda when baking as a raising agent or you may have used it in your fridge to absorb odors. It  is also used in some antacids and toothpastes.
  • 1 and a half cups of water -You can use pure water to make this if you like…I do, but regular tap water should be okay too.

Mix ingredients and store in an old shampoo bottle ready to use.  I tried using a spray bottle but the mixture didn’t spray very well at all.

This will create a fairly watery mixture. I know some people prefer a paste but go with what suits you.

Tips for Using the Baking Soda Shampoo

  • Apply the baking soda mix to wet hair.
  • Ensure you shake the bottle first as the baking soda will settle to the bottom.
  • For your first wash you might like to wash all your hair with the baking soda mix. For the second and subsequent washes just wash the scalp area as the ends may dry out depending on your hair type.
  • I simply pour the mixture onto the top of my scalp and massage in and then rinse thoroughly. If you don’t rinse well you may end up with an itchy scalp and possible dandruff and a build up over time leaving your hair looking heavy and lank.
  • I find that the baking soda mixture quantities given above will cover about 3 to 4 washes…it just depends on your hair length and how much you want to use.

Where Can You Buy Baking Soda?

Baking soda (also known as bicarbonate of soda in some countries) can be found at most grocery stores. You can also buy it from Amazon here.

How to make homemade conditioner…

Ingredients

  • ½ cup apple cider vinegar (I use the one with the ‘mother’ – not sure if that makes any difference but just ensure that it is apple cider vinegar and not regular white vinegar. Apple cider vinegar shouldn’t leave a smell on your hair after rinsing out)
  • ½ cup water

Combine the ingredients and store in a spray bottle ready for use.

Tips for Using the Apple Cider Vinegar Conditioner

  • It’s best to store in a spray bottle as it is easy to apply.
  • Simply spray on the ends of your hair and massage in.
  • You can use as much or as little as you like.
  • Every now and then I will spray the mixture on my scalp as well.
  • Rinse well after applying. You can leave in for a few minutes before rinsing off.

Where Can You Buy Apple Cider Vinegar?

One of the best brands of apple cider vinegar is by a company called Bragg. You can buy it at most health food stores or from Amazon here.
