Understanding Wicca – Let’s Get it Straight

Ritual Tools - Brass Pentacle Paten Altar PlateWith ‘new age’ practices gaining in popularity, Wicca enjoyed resurgence – peaking with the TV show ‘Charmed’.  The series followed sisters who were ‘good’ witches and the first episode, entitled ‘Something Wicca This Way Comes’, pulled record audiences.  People have mixed reactions to Wicca – is it a harmless, nature based phenomenon or hags on broomsticks?  Read on to find out more…

Are Wiccans Witches?

This is the most common question and one that can cause a lot of misunderstandings and unnecessary ill feeling, so let’s answer it first of all.

Wicca is a form of paganism, in the same way that Catholicism is a form of Christianity.  All Wiccans are not Witches and all Witches are not Wiccans.  Just because someone is a Wiccan, it doesn’t mean that they are a Witch.  The confusion probably arises because both Wiccans and Witches are forms of paganism but they are quite different from each other.

Further confusion arises from how we perceive Wiccans and Witches.  There are Wiccans who do call themselves Witches but these are ‘hedge’ or ‘white’ witches who work with herbs to create natural herbal medicine.  Our stereotyped view of ancient wrinkled women dressed all in black with hooked noses is a throwback to the times when ‘Witches’ were burned at the stake.  People were taught to view ‘Witches’ as evil and frightening but these poor unfortunate women were often simple herbalists who helped sick people in their village and often acted as midwives.

What is Wicca?

Wicca is one of the most commonly practised forms of Paganism.  Paganism is one of the very oldest religions, going back to the beginnings of time.  Wiccans believe that the God and Goddess are divine and most often follow the goddess.  Wiccans can belong to a group or work alone as a ‘solitary practitioner’.

The cycles of the moon and the beginning and middle of seasons are times for religious ceremonies.  These celebrations are known as circles or rituals and are for the honouring of nature.  During the ceremony, an altar is used, which may be a simple table with a cloth.  Various items are placed on the altar, including an athame, which is a blunt edged knife.  This often alarms those who don’t understand its’ purpose.  Not cutting is involved and the athame is simply symbolic.  Other items may include cups (chalices), candles, incense and pictures or items decorated with the pentacle.

What is the pentacle?

Students of Wiccan or paganism often wear an item of jewelry depicting this symbol.  It is a five pointed star, inside a circle.  This is where many people make mistaken judgements about wiccans.  The uninformed see the star and think it is a sign of Satanism.  It isn’t!  Let’s get this straight once and for all. The pentacle that wiccans wear has five points which stand for earth, air, fire, water and the essence of spirit which they believe binds all living things together.  The pentagram is a five pointed star worn upside down by Satanists and those who have an interest in black magic…definitely not wiccans!  Wiccans don’t believe in Satan so why would they worship him?

What other symbols do wiccans use?

There are many.  Celtic knot work is popular, as are crosses, triskeles (the three pointed celtic knot that was the symbol in ‘Charmed’), the double headed axe, nature and Goddess imagery.

Do Wiccans believe in and practice magic?

Yes and no.  They believe in magick – which is different from magic.  Wiccans use the extra ‘k’ on the end to differentiate between what they practice and the David Copperfield, Kriss Angel style of showbiz magic.  Wiccans use natural items such as herbs, stones, crystals etc to create change that will help with happiness and growth.  They use positive imagery and believe in personal responsibility.  Wiccans believe that whatever they wish for, comes back to them 10 fold so for that very good reason, wiccans do not cast evil spells.

But Wiccans cast love spells…don’t they?

Most definitely not!  Wiccans believe in free will and so to cast a spell ‘making’ someone fall in love would be against their beliefs.  All they can do to help the path of love is to cast a very general spell, asking that if someone’s affections are returned, the couple may be helped to be together…but only if the object of desire reciprocates and wishes it to happen.

What is the Wiccan Rede?

This is the list of ethics or moral behaviour that wiccans live by.  It can be summed up by one line from the Rede: “And ye harm none, do what ye will”.  It is similar to the Hippocratic oath that Doctors take when they qualify and pledge to “…first, do no harm.”

The Wiccan Rede is very like the Ten Commandments but it differs in one major aspect – it doesn’t cover marriage and adultery.  Wiccans believe that love is sacred and doesn’t require legalizing.  If two individuals genuinely love each other, it doesn’t matter what their race or gender is.

What is handfasting?

‘Handfasting’ ceremonies are becoming increasingly popular as marriage ceremonies for those who do not want a traditional ‘religious’ wedding.  The name comes from the practice of the couple holding hands during the ceremony and then having their hands tied together, often with ribbons, to symbolise the joining.  It is said to be the origin of the phrase ‘tying the knot’.

However, there is a lot of confusion about how handfasting originated and what it has to do with Wiccan or Pagan ritual.  There appear to be three meanings and three different historical periods for the practice.

  1. From medieval times to the early 1600’s, handfasting was a Christian ceremony and was like a formal engagement.
  2. From the late 1700’s until the early 1900’s, it was erroneously thought to be a ‘trial’ marriage which lasted for one year and one day.  No one at that time practised it – but during those years, it was believed to have been practised prior to the late 18th Century.
  3. From the late 1900’s, the ‘year and a day’ myth persisted and handfasting is now common practice among wiccans, pagans and those who are ‘charmed’ (excuse the pun!) by it

Be nice to Wiccans!

Wiccans are gentle, caring people who don’t deserve the ‘witch’ accusations that are often hurled at them.  A love of nature and an attempt to strive for balance is nothing like the Halloween characters that are so popular.  We hope that we have cleared up a few misunderstandings regarding Wicca and its’ practice.

Soul of Healing AffirmationsHow often have you heard people say “think positive”?  Affirmations may sound a bit way out but they are simply about thinking positive.  If it’s that easy, why aren’t we all doing it?

How we sabotage ourselves

We are masters at putting ourselves down.  We have a continuous dialogue in our heads or out loud that may sound like the following…“I’m such an idiot”, “I’d buy those jeans if only I was thin…”, “My skin looks awful”, “Everyone understood that except me but I’m too scared to ask because I’m so stupid…”  the list is endless but you get the gist.

This constant bombardment of negativity goes on hour by hour, day by day and so on.  Now, imagine a scene in a Supermarket where you see a Mother berating her child in a similar fashion.  Constant criticism.  Wouldn’t you think she was an awful parent?  You bet!  But that’s what we do to ourselves all the time and then we wonder why we feel stuck in a rut and unable to loose weight, go for that promotion, ask that cute girl out on a date, finally attempt to fix that leaking faucet…why should we bother?  We’re going to fail or mess up somehow so it becomes easier not to try.

We are creating our own reality

Let’s go back to that Mom in the Supermarket.  If she tells her child often enough that he / she is useless, worthless, hopeless, then that is what the child will become.  Let’s reverse that.  Now, she’s praising her child, paying attention to what he / she needs, listening, validating and appreciating.  Her child will grow up to be confident, comfortable in their own skin and ready to take on challenges and achieve their potential.  Isn’t it time you did the same for yourself?

Where do I start?

First of all, get used to the idea of using affirmations.  When you are so accustomed to subconsciously hearing a negative internal (or external) dialogue, it can make you feel very self conscious to even think about changing.  Why?  Because you are finally getting ready to take charge and take responsibility for your own self perception which will lead to a change in how others see you.  That can be scary.  Maybe you have become so used to how you are now that you are not altogether ready to make changes and push yourself forward.  You might be thinking that this sounds crazy.  Surely everyone wants to change for the better.  You’d think…but let’s examine what that means.

Are you really ready to change?

Let’s say that you get ready, start using affirmations and gradually see a change.  Because that is what is going to happen.  You may have thought that you want to lose weight for a long time – but what are the consequences of that?  You will undoubtedly attract more attention from others – are you able to deal with that?  Is your spouse or significant other able to deal with it?  If you finally get up enough confidence to go back to school, or get that haircut you’ve been dreaming of, or even just start wearing more make-up…all of these things will create further changes around you.

You probably think that we sound like real kill-joys.  You haven’t even started yet and already we are throwing obstacles into your path.  Actually, what we are doing is making you aware that you will be leaving a ‘comfort zone’ that you have been safely cocooned in – maybe for a long time.  You need to be absolutely sure in your own mind that you want these positive changes.  If you don’t do this at the beginning, any affirmations will become mere words and you will soon be self-sabotaging again to return to that safe, warm place…and that would be such a shame.

Ready and willing

Great!  Now, you may or may not have been aware of your own subtle (or not so subtle!) put downs.  The first step is to become very aware of them.  They are not helping you and are a barrier to you progress, so they are the first things to go.  If you don’t do this, you can say as many affirmations as you like but a little voice in the back of your mind will be replying ‘Yeah, right!’ and you’ll have an internal argument going on which will drive you nuts and have you racing backwards.

So, listen to what you say to yourself.  Pay attention.  Every time you catch yourself saying or thinking something negative about yourself – stop, and correct it.  When you look in the mirror first thing in the morning and think ‘Yuk!’ stop right there.  Take a good look at yourself, smile and say ‘good morning!’.  If your internal voice criticizes your weight, stop and think, or say – ‘We’re not going to do that anymore’.

It sounds too simplistic…

It might do – but it works.    The next thing to do is to find out which kind of affirmations will suit you best.  People fall into natural groups – some respond best to visual stimuli, others to sound.  You will know already which one you are in.  Think back to a situation such as a wedding you went to.  What do you remember?  How beautiful the bride looked?  How amazing the reception room looked?  You would be a visual person.  If your main memories are of the music and the words of the ceremony, you’re more likely to be primarily auditory and therefore will respond best to sound.

The Mirror – An exercise for ‘visual’ people

Choose a time when you are alone in the house and not likely to be disturbed for a while.  Find a full length mirror and stand in front of it.  This works best if you are in your underwear or not in any clothes at all – so make sure you are up to this and be brave!  Start looking at yourself in the mirror and work your way from top to bottom or vice versa, thinking or saying as many good things about your body as you can.  You may find that you feel very embarrassed and don’t even want to look to begin with but this is normal.  Just try and stick with it.  Before you start, you may think that you hate everything about your body but keep it simple.  Look at your feet.  They carry you around all day.  That makes them good feet.  Look at your hands.  Think of the hundreds of ways they help you every day.  Good hands.

The more you do this, the easier it will become and the more you will like yourself and the nagging voice in your head will start to change.

How to make this an ‘auditory’ exercise

Simply repeat the exercise above but make sure that you speak your thoughts out loud.  This will help to impress them upon your brain and emphasise the message.

How else can I do this?

If you’re not happy with this idea, try writing things down.  Start with a simple list of ten things that you would like to change about yourself.  Make yourself read it out loud to help to re-inforce it.  Put a date on the page and then put it somewhere safe and set a reminder in your diary, on your cell phone or on your pc to go and check that paper in a weeks time.  During that week, you carry on with ‘catching’ your negative thoughts and turning them right around to positives.  When you check your page a week later, you might be surprised at how you feel when you read what you wrote…

Need more help?

Go to Amazon.com and put Affirmations into the search box.  You will be shown hundreds of books and audio cd’s to choose from.  Stick with it and watch your life change.  You’ll wish you’d done this years ago.  Don’t waste any more time or energy on allowing negativity to hold you back.  You deserve better!  Good luck!

Everything You Need to Know About Auras

There are two types of auras – the medical ones and the spiritual ones.  Medical auras are sometimes seen by people who are just about to have an epileptic fit, or who have a migraine coming on.  Their vision is often disturbed by bright or flashing lights or by what they see starting to look distorted or blurry.  However, we are going to take a look at spiritual auras – which are a different thing altogether.

All living things have an aura

An aura is the field of electromagnetic energy that surrounds every living organism.  The energy surrounds the body and can extend as far as two to three feet.  It can be seen all around the body apart from under the feet, where it sinks into the earth and ‘keeps us grounded’.

Can you see or feel it?

Some people can naturally see the aura.  It is something that you can learn to do and later in this article we will be explaining how.  However, most people can feel it and it is likely that you already have.  Before you dismiss this as ‘psychic babble’, think back to a time when you walked in on a couple who had rowed before you arrived.  They might be charming and welcoming but you would probably still feel the tension in the air.  This is caused by the negative energy of their auras.  If that doesn’t work for you, think of someone you know whose company you enjoy because they always leave you feeling great.  That’s the positive energy of their aura.  Alternatively, some people leave you ‘drained’…you’re picking up on their negative aura!

Feeling off color?

Those who see the aura can tell how a person is feeling by looking at the colors.  Each color has a different health meaning and association with it.

You don’t have to believe in any of this to instinctively know what you are lacking.  Just take a moment to try this simple exercise.  If you are good at visualization, simply imagine the colors.  If not, make a table either on your pc or physically, with colored card or use a paint sample card.  Number each of the colors as follows -

1.       Scarlet red

2.       Orange

3.       Yellow

4.       Green

5.       Light blue

6.       Navy blue (indigo)

7.       Purple

8.       Black

9.       Brown

10.   White

Now, simply relax and see what color you feel drawn to.  Then find it in our list and discover what you need.

Red

If you chose  red then then you might be feeling low on energy at the moment.  Make an effort to do something that you know lifts and energizes you.  It could be that you’re feeling sluggish and need to do a bit more exercise?  Alternatively, you could be feeling overwrought or angry and need to cool off.  Try and surround yourself with green which is a color that neutralizes high emotions and anger.

Orange

If you were drawn to this then you could be emotionally down or drained.  Go and see a friend who can give you an emotional lift or watch a feel-good movie.  Or, it could mean that you may be feeling unbalanced, especially if you have been devoting a lot of your energies to work or to family.  You need to get the balance back.

Yellow

Have you been worrying too much about something and finding it difficult to see the positive side?  This worry may also be affecting your digestive system so you may have had ‘nervous’ or ‘upset’ tummy.  Yellow is an optimistic color which is telling you not to worry any more.  It’s also a creative color so you may be looking for inspiration as you embark on a project or task.

Green

Not surprisingly, this nature color shows that you crave peace.  Your life may be feeling far from harmonious.  If you’ve been feeling emotionally numb or closed, or beating yourself up, take a nature walk even if it’s just on some grass.  It will help to reconnect you and help you start functioning and liking yourself again.

Light Blue

This is the color for healing so you may need to relax or concentrate on your health more than you have been doing.  If you’ve been finding communication hard, the relaxation will help.  Also, if you ‘see’ bright blue behind your eyelids just as you’re heading for sleep, you could already be receiving spiritual healing or a nudge to open up a little more to the psychic realms.

Indigo

Are you reaching out to learn more about the psychic world and how you can work in and with it?  This is the color of psychic ability so take it a step further and try to connect by sitting quietly or meditating.  If you find this hard, start by listening to your dreams.  Is there a message there?  Alternatively, you could be in a situation where more imagination is needed.

Violet

Have you been tied down with a lot of ‘material’ worries?  This spiritual color is telling you to take time out to enjoy, strengthen or explore the spiritual areas of your life.  Vegetarians are often drawn to this color and / or it could mean that you need to check your diet.

Brown

This color is rarely seen in the aura and it’s more likely that you have been pulled towards brown for your own reasons rather than spiritually led ones.  Do you feel as if you need bringing back down to earth for some reason?  Alternatively, it’s possible that you’ve been overdoing it on the psychic front and need to take some time out.

Black

The obvious conclusion to jump to is that you are feeling very low and need a lift in which case, the answer here is to surround yourself with bright colors.  However, black is often seen as a protection – hiding your light from anyone who you feel might harm you.  Even if you don’t believe in any of this, ask your Spirit Guides and Angels for help and protection and they will be there for you.

White

This is another protection color so as with black, ask for help.  Actually speak the words out loud or say them in your head.  Or – you may have been already asking for spiritual help.  If life has been feeling heavy and a chore, it’s time to get back to the pure innocent child inside you and lighten up.

How can I see an aura?

Unless you are a natural (in which case you would probably already be able to see auras) this won’t happen overnight so just keep at it.  You need to practice as regularly as you can.

You are going to start by attempting to see the aura around your own hands.  When you’re learning, it’s best to have gentle or very low light.  You also need to feel comfortable and relaxed so try this in bed!  If you don’t have a low light, leave the light on outside your bedroom and just leave the door open a tiny bit.

Step One

Once you feel relaxed, hold your hands out in front of you.  Don’t fixate or stare at them – just let your gaze fall gently on them and try to stay relaxed.  When you first start to see it, your aura may look like the heat haze that you sometimes see rising off a hot road.

Step Two

If you’re finding it hard to look at your hands without staring hard, try keeping your hands in your field of vision but look beyond them.  You may feel that you’ve lost focus but this will help you to understand how to look at them in a ‘relaxed’ way.

Step Three

Bring the tips of the fingers on each hand slowly closer together until they are almost touching but not quite.  Your aura may show are tiny lines of light which could be white, blue or red.  Try again but this time with just your index fingers.

Step Four

Once you start seeing any form of light between your fingers, very slowly move them apart and this may help you to see it better.

Practice makes perfect!

Keep practicing and don’t be disheartened if you don’t see it on your first few attempts.  Seeing the aura is like any psychic work – it’s like toning up a muscle that you don’t use regularly.  With practice, it will become easier and faster until it is almost automatic.

An Introduction to Runes

bloodstone-rune-setRunes are enjoying a major comeback but are often viewed as a ‘new age’ phenomenon.  Nothing could be further from the truth.  Here’s our guide to Runes.

What are runes?

The word Rune means ‘mystery’ or ‘secret knowledge’.  Runes are small, flat-pebble shaped stones or pieces of wood, crystal or glass.  A rune set contains 24 or 25 runes.  This is because some sets contain a blank stone (the Wyrd) and some don’t.  24 runes will each have a different inscription – from the runic alphabet, which is where the set gets its’ name.  The alphabet is further divided into three groups called ‘aetts’.

The runic alphabet

This is called the ‘futhark’.  It has 24 letters, begins with ‘F’ and ends with ‘O’.  This alphabet was used by Scandinavians and the people of Northern Germany from around 100 BC and was still being used in the Middle ages.  For these reasons, the most commonly used type of runic set is called the Elder or Germanic Futhark.  There are also Younger and Anglo Saxon runes but these are used less often.

The futhark died out in the Middle Ages because it was overtaken by the Roman alphabet.

What are they used for?divination-set-runes-and-more

Runes are used for divination.  You ask the runes a question and then, without seeing what you are choosing, select the runes from a bag.  The reader then lays them out and passes on to you what the runes are advising.  Each runic inscription, or letter of the futhark alphabet, has a meaning.  It is thought that tarot cards were derived from runes.

Like Tarot, the readings are general and outline a path that you may or may not choose to follow.  Both Tarot and Rune readings work on the premise that they can show you what may happen if you continue on the current path.  However, we all have freedom of choice and it is up to you whether you stay on that path or choose another route.  The future is not set in stone and we are continually faced with a number of ‘crossroads’ at which we have to pause and choose our direction.

Brief History of runes

Legend has it that one of the Norse Gods, Odin, hung himself upside down from the tree of the world (called Yggdrasil) for night days and nights as a ritual of self-sacrifice.  It is thought that the image of The Hanged Man on a tarot card is based on this legend.  Odin then died and passed to the afterlife where he was given knowledge and then reborn.  His new-found knowledge was given to the people as runes.

Runic symbols have been found in Swedish Bronze Age rock carvings.  Runic inscriptions have been found on swords and bronze pendants, listing the whole futhark in the correct order.  One of the best examples of this is called the Kylver stone.  It was found in 1903 in Gotland in Sweden and dates back to 400 AD.

For centuries, even commoners knew how to use runes.  They were frequently used to ask for help with anything from family issues to larger public events.  However, as Christianity grew in popularity, the use of runes was highly frowned upon with the result that in 1639 their use was forbidden by the Church because they viewed it as a satanic practice.  Rune masters were killed and it drove users underground.  To prevent this continued practice, a law passed in Iceland declaring that anyone found to have runes in their possession would be burned at the stake.  Despite all of this, the runic alphabet and its’ meanings were saved in ancient manuscripts and inscriptions.

bone-rune-setWhy runes fell from favor

Runes began to be used openly again around the early 1900′s.  German scholars became interested but sadly, these people were working for the Nazis in the 1920′s and 30′s.  This made people associate the unfortunate runes with Nazi ideas and racism and their use was shunned.

This ‘blacklisting’ of runes continued up until the 1950′s and 60′s and even then, very little was written about them.  However, in the mid 1980′s, the ‘New Age’ movement took hold and many pagan religions were taken up again.  It was at this point that the runes became popular once again both as a divinatory tool and a system to use to increase self awareness.

How can I get some?

Runes are now easily available.  You can get them online or from any ‘new age’ shop in your area.  Or you can make your own.  There are many websites and books that will show you how.

Take your time choosing your set.  There are now so many different ones available, in wood, stone, ceramic, crystal, glass and many others.  You will find yourself drawn to one more than others.  In addition, some believe that the material the runes are made from enhances the reading.

For example,

  • Gold Runes are used for queries regarding business, career, and property
  • Jade Runes are popular if you want to know about love, friendship, and relationships
  • Ice Runes are best for questions about struggle, conflict, and achievement
  • Spirit Runes will help with questions regarding mysticism, spirituality, and religion
  • Stone Runes are for spreads about the natural world and things beyond human control

If you are new to runes, make sure that your set includes a copy of the futhark and its’ meanings, or buy a simple ‘Runes for beginners’ book that will help you to start using your set.  It’s best to start with a simple reading or ‘spread’ such as The Three Norns, in which the first rune is the past, the second the the present and the third, the future.

Enjoy the beauty and wisdom of your runes but don’t forget that you have free will.  Choices have consequences and so no divinatory path is ever set in stone.
